The art of haggling ..

When you’re on the road backpacking you are inevitably going to get your haggling skills tested. Now for all you penny pinchers and people who are budget conscious being good at haggling and being bad can definitely add up the costs as nothing really has a price tag when your in poorer countries.

What I found when I first went backpacking was that I was getting ripped off a lot and this is bound to happen if its your first time, anyone who says they haven’t been ripped off is lying! So while I can’t guarantee a formula that will stop you getting ripped off I can get you prepared and in the right mindset from the start. For any solo travellers first time on the road getting out that airport or train station in a buzzing world of new culture and hectic traffic you stick out like a sore thumb for rip of merchants.

You will find that a lot of people that rip you off in poor countries are actually good people believe it or not and sometimes you have to give them a bit of leeway as people in the western world have it a lot better than 3rd world countries. Their mindset is that anyone from a developed country must be stinking rich and because they have so much money they have a god given right to just throw cash out like well.. A malfunctioning cash machine that’s spitting out money, well it isn’t true, in reality a lot of people who are on the road months are actually poor buggers looking for the cheapest option possible.

Experienced travellers obviously don’t get ripped off because they have that air of confidence and comfort about their swagger like they know the ropes but for a newbie walking out onto khao san road looking like a helpless little sheep the wolves will come out to play.

Anyways enough rambling I am going to keep this short and sweet. This mindset that I adopt and serves me well might come as a shock to you, but get into the mindset that no one is to be trusted! Yes that’s right, don’t trust no one. All scams come from a stranger coming up to you in the street and sweet talking you trying to be friendly, you get sucked in and then soon enough their sweet talking you about how they can get free tuck tuck rides and then you get in the tuck tuck and suddenly your being taken to a jewelry store and hassled for money or taken to a fake tourist information office where they will charge extortionate prices. Its a sad world we live in where we have to adopt this mindset but in my opinion 98% of people who approach you all friendly in a street want something out of you, I had to learn the hard way, I hope this can help anyone reading this, its such a shame for that 2% who are genuine curious people who just want to see what your like as most are intrigued by foreigners in their country.

As far as haggling goes in most poor countries I would say you could haggle for absolutely anything! My haggle technique is simply this, you ask how much an item is and whatever price they say, offer just under half in a firm manner (not rude) and most of the time they will say no, you will both be haggling and after about a minute turn as if to walk away, this is where the beauty happens… id say 90% of the time you turn to walk away it sinks in to them that they are going to loose commission so out of sheer desperation they will suddenly start lowering the price, milk it a little and carry on walking away slowly and you my friend will most likely get what you want for the desired price.

Some places will just let you walk away but what I described above is a very good technique, even better for you is if you know what to pay before you even bought it or haggled as you can go more direct and just offer a very low fee straight from the bat until you haggle to your desired price.

The best mindset I found is for it to be fun, believe me I used to hate it but I suddenly started to enjoy the process. Its not a competition about who can get the most out of the seller because truly good haggling is when both the seller and buyer come out happy. Never get heated or into an argument over haggling, remember keep it fun, have a laugh with the seller and enjoy yourself.

Backpacking, what to pack ? the essentials ……

Most people worry before they go backpacking what they need to pack.  My best advice isnt anything mystical, i always like to keep things simple so… here it is ……..

Pack as little as possible because as your  travelling and.. also in certain countries you dont really want to be carrying around heavyweights.  One of the lads i was travelling with around asia literally had a rucksack the size of one you would have taken to school or college !

  Halong bay Vietnam

Its a natural thing to worry espcecially if its your first time and people have the tendancy to pack way too much and also unecessary things they will never use.  Anyways heres my personal advice on what you should pack which could save you alot of excess bagage but also alot of stress, imagine getting off at that busy street in bangkok or that crowded market place in Delhi, you just want to find a hostel and relax not carry around a heavy backpack through those crazy streets.

The advice im going to give you is for third world undeveloped countries mainly for example your Asias, South America, Africa and generally where it is hot climate most year round but also think this benefits gerneral travel also.

If you can try only pack 35cl , yes thats very small ( Just abit bigger than a school bag )  but entirely possible and i am living proof and countless other young bucks on the road, especially if for example your going to Asia or South America for 3 months.  I personally wouldnt go heavier than 60cl ! you see lots of people who look like walking backpacks, all you can see is their little legs and a backpack and it looks like a walking backpack not a human.

Heres some sound advice to you , this may not seem feasible (espcially for your first time) but if you can keep it as light as you can ( golden rule ) you will save alot of wasted energy. OK cool , so as i was saying if i was travelling to cheap undeveloped countries with hot climate id be inclined to pack…

5-7 pairs of underwear/boxershorts/socks ( light pairs)

1 decent pair of shorts

1 swimming shorts/Bikini

4 light t-shirts

A decent Microfleece for cold aeroplane or busrides or perhaps mountain treks

Vest/tanktop/singlet

towel which folds up easily and takes up no space

Flip flops

Water proof Jacket

A very good camera with good video recording.  I dont reccomend SLR’s , i think their too bulky and personally think that if you shell out money on a good digital camera its good enough, you can still capture amazing pictures, to me a decent camera is essential, intact maybe the most important tool, no money in the world can replace a good picture, you want to show friends , family or future kids the amazing life and stories of your adventures and life discovery.

Basic Toiletries and maybe a first aid kit. Ok thats it …….

Yes crap advice you might say, but as someone who has been travelling and loves it i can tell you that most places you go have all the essentials you need already, most have big brand named chemists to buy antiseptic etc.  Theres market stalls galore where you can literally buy hundreds upon thousands of designer goods and brand clothing, or cool clothing which has brands of certain places in each country for example ‘ Full moon party clothing’ or ‘ tubing in Vang Vieng clothing for pennies ( will talk about haggling for cheap as chip prices in another blog )

Obviously more developed countries to travel to for example for Canadas, Americas and Australias you would need to bring more clothing and a bigger backpacks and bring more of your own items as costs are expensive.  Im breaking the rule of my next trip as im eventually going to live in Australia after backpacking Asia so im taking a slightly bigger backpack ( 70cl) i would normally take 45cl as my personal choice.

What im trying to get at is you dont have to spend heaps of money buying a huge backpack or multiple clothes.  You dont have to lug around a heavy backpack, infact its cheaper to buy the majority of clothes and toiletries when your out at your destination ,everythings cheaper.

 Riding through Laos countryside

Last but not least some luxury items i suggest taking which have helped me when travelling and even been a lifesaver in boring situations.

1. decent pair of travel speakers ! yes if you got your ipods or mp3 players a little bit of music dosent do anyone anyharm.  When im sitting on my beach hut in Phillipines in El nido with some lime scale cliffs in the background and some white sandy beaches in front of me and i got my travel buddys sitting with me enjoying some drinks there is nothing better than having a good pair of speakers to sit back and relax or get pumped for a night of carnage

2. Laptop for backing up photos, will be thankful for this when you lose your photos ! also long bus journeys like my 32 hour one from Laos to Vietnam, a few movies or programs stored on a laptop dosent do any harm and also those nights in where you want to detox.  You can steal alot of wi-fi and accomodations generally provide free wi-fi.

3. Smartphone can be a godsend ! Especially having an iphone can do wonders on the road and has only served me well and you will not regret having this, not only will you have the tunes for a rainy day but there is hundreds of internet cafes you can go to where having an iphone is great for getting on facebook quickly and also awesome for skyping not to mention a fantastic camera which you can take proffesional photos from, possibly one of the best items you can take, also my iphone lasted 6 months travelling and tags each location you are in when you take a photo, when you look back you will not regret this!

Sunset on Borocay beach in Phillipines

Heres the thing , all those things you worry about before you go backpacking you will find when your out there you didnt need to worry about it at all.  This is something you will learn to let go of when you travel , its funny how you believe that voice in your head, its better to let go of it and go with the flow of life, you see some good returns

Go out and have fun !
